Podiatry, what is it?
PODIATRY is an area of health dedicated to the study, diagnosis and treatment of ailments affecting the foot, ankle and related structures of the leg.
Podiatrists (sometimes called Chiropodists in Melbourne) are able to assess, treat and manage all pathologies and injuries of the lower limb and foot through a variety of treatment tools.
Australian Podiatrists undergo training at University level over a period of 4 years resulting in a Bachelor of Podiatry degree.
[Update 2012 - Latrobe University has changed their degree from a Bachelor of Podiatry to a 'Bachelor of Health Sciences and Master of Podiatric Practice' . By making all health science students study the same course for the first 2 years - it allows for ease of transfer between podiatry and physiotherapy for example. Can I use my Medicare card for Podiatry services?
- Some patients are eligible for a rebate through Medicare under the Enhanced Primary Care Program. You must speak to your doctor to see if you are eligible for this program.
Do I need a Referral from my doctor to see a Podiatrist?
- No. Referrals are only required for patient’s under the Department of Veterans Affairs[DVA] or Medicare Enhanced Primary Care Program. All other patients can make a booking, without a doctors referral.
Do Private Health Funds cover me for Podiatry?
- Podiatry is covered under the extras table of most Private Health Funds. Before booking an appointment, please check with your health fund to see if you are covered for Podiatry services.
