Podiatry, what is it?

PODIATRY is an area of health dedicated to the study, diagnosis and treatment of ailments affecting the foot, ankle and related structures of the leg.

Podiatrists (sometimes called Chiropodists in Melbourne) are able to assess, treat and manage all pathologies and injuries of the lower limb and foot through a variety of treatment tools.

What is PodiatryAustralian Podiatrists undergo training at University level over a period of 4 years resulting in a Bachelor of Podiatry degree.

[Update 2012 - Latrobe University has changed their degree from a Bachelor of Podiatry to a 'Bachelor of Health Sciences and Master of Podiatric Practice' . By making all health science students study the same course for the first 2 years - it allows for ease of transfer between podiatry and physiotherapy for example. If you decide after 2 years you wish to change. Previously changing meant you had to complete extra subjects].

Podiatrists are also trained in the assessment of biomechanics and gait of the lower limb and are able to prescribe both prefabricated and customised foot orthoses Melbourne.
