What are Cracked or Fissured Heels?

CRACKED or fissured heels are an ongoing problem over the summer months and are aggravated by wearing open footwear. The warmer weather drys the skin out making it prone to splitting open and causing pain. The heels are a common area for this to occur due to the high amount of pressure they are subjected to with every step.

The skin around the periphery of the heel expands as the fat pad under the heel absorbs shock. This can be exacerbated by the presence of callous which splits more easily than healthy skin.

Why get treatment for Cracked Heels?

Fissures or cracks creat open wounds on your heels, which are not only painful, but are susceptible to infection. It is best to see a Podiatrist for management of cracked heels to reduce callous, dress wounds and employ taping techniques to reduce the load and discomfort.

How to avoid Cracked Heels?

Cracked or fissured heels can be avoided by keeping any callous to a minimum, regularly moisturizing and wearing closed in shoes and socks where appropriate.
