What is Forefoot Pain?

FOREFOOT pain or Metatarsalgia is a broad term used to describe a variety of conditions that cause pain in the forefoot.

Pain can present as burning, tingling, shooting pains, numbness, aching or throbbing and the presentation of these symptoms is vital in helping to reach an accurate diagnosis.

These conditions can range from Neuroma (nerve entrapment) to inflammatory conditions such as synovitis or bursitis, or even stress fractures of the metatarsal bones. Forefoot pain is often exacerbated by tight or excessively flexible footwear, or those with high heels.

How does Forefoot Pain Develop?

Foot mechanics and stress also play a large role in the development of forefoot pain. When the arch rolls in or collapses it effects the mechanics and pressure in the forefoot often causing splaying and irritation between structures. Also reduced motion or restriction in one joint can cause overload of adjacent joints resulting in injury. Alternatively a high arched foot can have limited ability to absorb shock increasing the risk of overuse type injuries.

Additional Diagnosis

Leah can refer for X-Ray and Ultrasound imaging where required to aid in the diagnosis of forefoot pain. The correct diagnosis must be made in order for the appropriate treatment plan to be implemented.

Forefoot Pain Treatment

Treatment can be as simple as footwear changes and padding through to more complex conditions which may require more aggressive and invasive modalities. Orthotic therapy is also commonly used as part of a multi-faceted management plan to reduce the overloading forces associated with forefoot pain.

Leah can assess and diagnose the underlying cause of your foot pain to ensure a rapid and full resolution of pain.
