Fitness and Health 2012 - put your best foot forward!

The new year is the perfect time to set some goals for your health and fitness.

Whether it be loosing weight, training for a particular event or simply getting fit, now is the perfect time whilst the sun is shining and the weather is warm. Unfotunately I see many people with the best of intentions but have niggling, injuries or pain holding them back. The best way to avoid this is to ensure you prepare yourself correctly prior to starting a new activity or exercise.

  1. Start by thinking about the type of exercise you want to do and how you can fit it into your lifestyle.
  2. Set yourself small goals and don't try to increase your activity too quickly. This is how overuse injuries develop! It takes time for your body to adapt to a new activity and if you push it too hard too quickly you will undoubtly end up sore! Seek advice from a health care professional or personal trainer if you are not sure how much is too much.
  3. Prepare your feet!!! Far too often people start a new activity in the old runners they have had sitting in the bottom of their wardrobe for 5+yrs which 9 times out of 10 are worn out and inappropriate for their new activity. For example wearing an old pair of tennis shoes to start running!

See the experts! Get your feet sorted with new shoes appropriate for your foot, biomechanics and your activity first. I suggest active feet is the best place to start. They are owned and operated by sports Podiatrists, ensuring that you are wearing the correct footwear for your activity.

By taking these simple steps prior to starting a new exercise regime you will have the best chance of achieving you goals and continuing with your chosen activity pain free! If you are still having problems with your feet, see a podiatrist.
